I’m curious how you arrived at these suggestions – the days’ readings have a very strong focus on the Good Shepherd, the day is called Good Shepherd Sunday, and most of the church will be praying for vocations. But you’ve only made one suggestion that’s directly based on this idea. Seems strange.
Actually, there are several songs that speak of the Good Shepherd, or the image of shepherd, or the shepherd ‘laying down his life for is sheep’ or the ‘hearing of the voice of the shepherd.’ For example:
1. One Faith (Talbot) – in fact, the fist lyric is “He is the Good Shepherd and he’s laid down his life for his sheep.”
2. Come Worship the Lord (Talbot) – “…for we are his people, the flock that he shepherds. Alleluia.”
3. The Lord is My Shepherd (Blakesley)
4. I Received the Living God (Ballard) – “Jesus said “I am the gate, gentle shepherd of my sheep…” etc.
5. Many and One (Angrisano) – every verse ends with “the shepherd who gathers us all.”
hearing the voice of the shepherd:
6. If Today (Bolduc) – “if today you hear the voice of God, open up your heart and listen to his word”
7. Mighty to Save (Morgan) – “I give my life to follow, everything I believe in. Now I surrender.”
laying down his life for his sheep:
8. Amazing Love (Foote) – “Amazing love! How can it be that you my king would die for me?”
Psalm 118 (The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone:)
9. This is the Day (Bolduc) or (Angotti)
The first reading speaks of how these things were done “in the name of Jesus”
10. At the Name of Jesus (Bolduc)
11. The Name of Jesus (Flynn)
And some are just continuing the Easter message/season:
Because He Lives (Amen)
Christ Is Risen
Easter Song
He Is Risen
Ye Sons and Daughters
Some are just great praise songs for after communion:
We Exalt Your Name (Jobe/Maher))
Jesus Messiah (Tomlin)
Oh Our Lord (Leonard/Jordan/Baloche)
That’s my way of thinking. I hope this helps. If these songs don’t work for you, use what does. These are just my ideas and suggestions. Oftentimes you might even get another idea from what you see here or elsewhere. -Ed
For what its worth, I love your comment. It’s fun to see where your head is at when making your selections. Helps me to think of other songs too. Would be interesting in the future too! (Fingers crossed) Well done as always. Big fan of your blog here at St. Monica’s in Santa Monica, CA.
